What’s New on the .79?

October 25th, 2008

<Swinging hands to clear the spiderwebs in front of me>  What’s up here on the board?  It reminds me of Mrs. Haversham’s house.  <looking for the clock broken in the corner and the rat-infested wedding cake>  There has to be something going on?

Got to Work on a D7010 AGAIN

July 23rd, 2008

Well I had the chance to help a fellow ham travling from Dallas to the North East Saturday. He had just purchased a Rd70 Head for his Kenwood and did not know how to program the APRs part. He was sending Aprs info out via a laptop and a phone modem in the laptop. Got him at least reciving could not set up beacons as he did not have a GPS for it.

Field Day 2008

June 30th, 2008

Well the great day has come and gone. But during that day we all had a great time. My personal goal during field day was to make as many contacts and gain us the most points. Not sure if I did that but I know I helped with 100 points on-the solar contacts. We made 6 of them and only needed 5. The Solar lasted a lot longer then I was thinking it would last. I have posted a few pictures on my personal site as we do not have the ability right now to post pictures on our site. http://stlsoar.spaces.live.com/default.aspx

Feel free to wander over there and take a look at the pictures I posted. I did not post all that I have as I had about a 100 pictures I took.

Next year I am going to find a crack staff of phone operators and try and stay ahead of Frank making cw contacts. Allen hopefully got the swing of it this year so he can practice all year and be ready to beat frank. Then we need at least 2 more to help with that task. Yes it will take that many people to make more contacts then Frank. Hopefully Bill will post our true totals once we have them, for this year. I am in hopes we logged them all correctly. I do think there could be logging errors as I know we were trying to get used to the software at first. I think Allen got to figure it out the best of all of us since he entered my first 20 contacts and got to play with it.

ISS digipeating again

June 25th, 2008

KB0OWD David wanted me to mention that the Space station (ISS) or knowen by it’s call sign ARISS is again in operation. When a shuttle is docked with the station they shut down all ham radio equipment. We are still not sure if they will be digipeating or in Voice Mode during field day. So this will be something to look foward to finding out what mode’s they might be operating on.

Field day 2008

June 22nd, 2008

My Idea on field day would include several things that might be fun for Visitors ! Number 1 would be try to work as many aprs contacts as we could not using digi’s. Also during space station Passes work the ISS with packet or Voice. The Rules state this is the one instance you can cross band or Cross Mode communicate. I have sent a msg requesting premision to use my Cargo Trailer and if approved it would also get us extra points as it is using solar charging on the Bat runing a 300 watt inverter.

Anyone else think this might be worth doing ?

Field Day 2008

June 22nd, 2008

This is a chance for all of us to get together, invite our friends and potential hams to come out and see what it is like to opperate.  As we have seen there is still a major place for us and the unique communications abilities we can provide.  Let us hear what you think about field day in general, and this years field day in particular.

There is nothing like getting a microphone in someones hands to make them radio active.

Thanks Marty

Ok I agree I need to figure out how to not rattle so many radios. So Marty has come up with a plan to reporgram my tracker to see if we can eliminate how much I bounce around and yet still leep the tracker in the Mode we would like to keep it in.

Today some one called me as I was flying and let me know I was sending out way to much data. So I am going to try and comply with there request. I think I had radios banging all over the place.

If you wish to view my flight today you can see it at http://aprs.fi/?call=KC5LFD-7&mt=m&z=11&timerange=86400

If I go fly before you see todays flight you will see the current one. I am going to try and stay 146.52 when I am in the air if you see me live give me a call !
